What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is set in 1984.
  • Less than a week before filming began, director Taika Waititi realized that the actor cast in the lead role was not suitable. James Rolleston was supposed to play an episodic role, and he was offered the part of the main character.
  • When the main character is talking to his friend, she says that her mother is currently playing poker on a machine. Poker machines only appeared in New Zealand in 1991, seven years after the time period shown in the film.
  • In the opening scene, among the wrecked cars, there is a white Ford Falcon EA van from 1991, which could not have existed in 1984.
