What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is one of several adaptations of the novel of the same name by Walter Scott.
  • The film was shot entirely in England. Some scenes were filmed at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, while the remaining scenes were shot at Pinewood Studios soundstages in Buckinghamshire.
  • As in Walter Scott's novel, the film portrays Robin Hood (Locksley) as a contemporary of King Richard the Lionheart (1157–1199). However, according to modern scholars, the real historical prototype of Robin Hood was either Robert Hood, son of forester Adam Hood of Surrey, who deserted military service in 1317, or Robert Good, a tenant from Wakefield who participated in the uprising led by the Earl of Lancaster in 1322 and later became a chamberlain to King Edward II (1307–1327). Therefore, Locksley's lifetime should be attributed not to the late 12th century, but to the first half of the 14th century, and virtually all the weapons, armor, and almost all the historical setting of the film correspond to this era.
  • Actor Julian Glover, who played King Richard the Lionheart, had previously played the same role in the television series "Doctor Who".
