What's left behind the scenes

  • Mel Gibson purchased the rights to adapt Simon Winchester's book 'The Surgeon of Crowthorne' in 1999. Work on the adaptation took 17 years.
  • Work on the film resulted in a legal dispute between Mel Gibson and the film company Voltage Pictures, as the company's management did not allow Gibson and director Farad Safinia to film on location in Oxford, UK. The film had already exceeded its initially approved budget and was behind schedule, so the studio ordered filming to take place in Ireland. Gibson and Safinia left the project, and one of the screenwriters, Todd Komarnicki, became the new director. Gibson and his company Iron Productions went to court, attempting to prevent the film's release, but their claim was dismissed, so Gibson had to settle for refusing to participate in the film's promotional campaign.
  • The original title of the film translates to "The Professor and the Madman".
