- It is a remake of the lost film 'Valley of the Mists' by Willis O'Brien.
- RKO and Willis O'Brien, who wrote the screenplay, planned to film it as early as 1942, but it was released only 27 years later, and seven years after O'Brien's death, thanks to the persistence of his student Ray Harryhausen.
- "Gwangi" in the local indigenous language means "lizard".
- The film was released in the US later, along with "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" (1970).
