What's left behind the scenes
- The plot is based on facts from the biography of the German artist Gerhard Richter.
- The only member of the film crew who did not know German was cinematographer Caleb Deschanel. He memorized the English script of the film, so he was able to guess what was being discussed at any given moment during filming.
- When Kurt (played by Tom Schilling) visits an exhibition with his aunt at the beginning of the film, he is captivated by the sculpture “Girl with Blue Hair” by German sculptor Eugen Hoffmann (1892-1955).
- The character played by Oliver Masucci is based on the artist Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), who received the title of professor at the Düsseldorf Academy in 1961. It was then that the artist Gerhard Richter first enrolled there.
