What's left behind the scenes
- From May 18 to 27, 1980, protests (known as the Gwangju Uprising) took place in the city of Gwangju, brutally suppressed by the authorities.
- The film is banned in China because it depicts the suppression of popular unrest by the army, as occurred in Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1989.
- All events from the taxi driver's life are fictional, as his identity became known only after the film's release.
- Jürgen Hintzpeter (Thomas Kretschmann) was the only journalist to film the massacres during the suppression of the Gwangju Uprising.
- Filming took place from June 5 to October 24, 2016.
