What's left behind the scenes
- Almost all of the background actors in the film had served in either the Royal Australian Air Force or the Australian Army. They were simply asked to shave off their mustaches.
- Director Brian Trenchard-Smith recounted that the Frenchman was played by Michael Massi, an American actor from a French family living in Kansas City. He insisted that a Frenchman should be cast in the role, and Massi convinced him during auditions that he was a genuine Frenchman, maintaining his deception both on and off set until the very last day of the 18-day shoot.
