What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Charles Portis' novel 'True Grit' (1968).
  • Michael Biehn auditioned for the role of Ned Pepper.
  • Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin played Wild Bill Hickok in the films 'Wild Bill' (1995) and 'Young Riders' (1989) respectively.
  • One of the few films produced by Steven Spielberg that does not begin with the 'Amblin Entertainment' or 'DreamWorks Pictures' logo.
  • In 'True Grit' (1969), Rooster Cogburn wears an eye patch over his left eye. In 'True Grit' (2010), the patch is worn over his right eye.
  • Rooster Cogburn is around 40 years old, however both John Wayne and Jeff Bridges were over sixty when they played the role.
  • J.K. Simmons voiced Noble Daggert, Mattie's lawyer.
  • Michael Biehn auditioned for the role of Ned Pepper.
  • Due to child labor laws, Joel and Ethan Coen (the directors, writers, and producers of the film) were unable to film any scenes involving Haley Steinfeld after dark. This introduced certain difficulties into the process (as the film has many night scenes) and made scheduling challenging. In many of the night scenes, an adult stunt double played Mattie, not Steinfeld.
  • 15,000 teenage girls auditioned for the role of Mattie. Haley Steinfeld played the role in the film.
  • In scenes where horses fall or experience pain or fear, a combination of appropriate animal training and skillful editing was used.
  • According to Jeff Bridges, who played Rooster Cogburn, the Coen brothers first instructed him to completely forget how John Wayne had played the role. They informed the actor that they intended to return to the original source – the novel of the same name by Charles Portis from 1968, who also became one of the screenwriters.
  • When creating the image of Fort Smith, computer graphics and special effects were not used. Filming took place in another Texan town, as it still preserved the old layout and wide streets in places. The props department had to do a lot of work: they integrated mock-ups between existing buildings, repainted buildings, and remodeled facades to match the required historical period; sand was piled onto the paved streets, making them appear unpaved; telephone poles, a hallmark of the 20th century, were either dug up or draped to look like trees. The film takes place in winter, and the leaves of a tree that accidentally ended up in the frame during the hanging scene had to be torn off by hand. Finally, a small section of railway was borrowed from a museum for a specially constructed train of the appropriate era.
  • For the corresponding scene, Matt Damon tied a tie around his tongue to create the impression for the audience that he had no tongue at all.
  • Elizabeth Marvel, who played the grown-up one-armed Mattie, was doubled by Ruth Morris. In reality, Morris had even more screen time than Marvel.
