What's left behind the scenes

  • The role of Gail Harris, mother of John Paul Getty III, was offered to Angelina Jolie during the pre-production stage, but the actress declined. When the start of the project was officially announced, the same role was offered to Natalie Portman. Portman was expecting her second child at the time and also refused. As a result, the role went to Michelle Williams.
  • Due to the decision to reshoot 22 scenes featuring Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer, an additional 8 shooting days and $10 million were spent.
  • For filming in another project, Mark Wahlberg lost almost 14 kilograms when he was called to Rome for reshoots. All of the actor's previous costumes had to be altered to fit his changed physique.
  • Christopher Plummer (1929-2021) claimed he could immediately join the filming process instead of Kevin Spacey because he had also been considered for the role and had even read the script. He had less than two weeks to learn his lines, but he had personally met Jean Paul Getty (1892-1976) in London in the 1960s.
  • When Christopher Plummer replaced Kevin Spacey in the role of Getty, director Ridley Scott decided not to show him footage with Spacey and not even to tell him how Spacey had played the character. After filming was completed, Scott stated that the actors played completely differently, but equally well – each in his own way.
  • Jean Paul Getty was 80 years old when his grandson was kidnapped. To resemble Getty, Spacey, who was 58 at the time, had to wear makeup. This necessity disappeared when 88-year-old Plummer replaced Spacey.
  • In the finale, the audience is informed that some of the events shown in the film were altered for greater dramatic effect. For example, the young Paul's father (played by Andrew Bucan) demanded money from his grandfather (played by Christopher Plummer) for the ransom more aggressively than depicted in the film. Paul himself was regularly beaten and tortured during his five-month captivity. After his release, he was picked up on the highway by a truck driver (there was no chase). His mother insisted that the boy call his grandfather and thank him for his rescue (the grandfather provided the ransom money), but he didn't answer the phone. Getty did not die the same night, as shown in the film, but lived for another three years after his grandson's release.
  • When Christopher Plummer replaced Kevin Spacey in the role of Getty, director Ridley Scott decided not to show him any footage with Spacey and didn’t even tell him how Spacey had played the character. After filming was completed, Scott stated that the actors played the role completely differently, but equally well – each in his own way.
