What's left behind the scenes

  • Ian Bannen was originally chosen for the role of Hirsch. However, he was so nervous about a kiss with another actor on screen potentially harming his career that he couldn't focus on his work, and was fired shortly after filming began. Later, Ian regretted not appearing in the film after all.
  • This marked the first screen appearance of Daniel Day-Lewis, who was 14 years old at the time of filming. He played a young vandal who damaged expensive cars near a church. His fee was two pounds sterling.
  • The film is based on the story of the relationship between director John Schlesinger (1926-2003) and actor John Stainer.
