What's left behind the scenes

  • Belogorye was originally planned to be filmed in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, and picturesque boxwood groves near Sochi were selected long before filming began. However, by the time filming started, almost all of the boxwood had been destroyed by the box tree moth. This ecological disaster forced the film crew to venture deeper into the mountains in search of surviving relic groves. The rocks that the characters are forced to navigate were filmed in the mountains of Kabardino-Balkaria and Adygea. Scenes where Ivan first enters the ancient world were filmed in the Mozhaysk district of the Moscow region.
  • Barbara’s crown was woven from lace, and then metal was applied using galvanization – first copper, then silver.
  • The pool for filming scenes in the swamp was created in a pavilion. It took three weeks and 200 tons of water to build it.
  • The Water Goblin (Sergey Burunov) was created entirely using computer animation.
  • Before each filming day, three hours were spent applying makeup to actor Konstantin Lavronenko, who played the role of Koschei.
  • The jewelry for Barbara (Ekaterina Vilkova) was provided by the Axenoff Jewellery house.
  • Filming took place in the summer of 2016. Some scenes were shot in pavilions in Moscow, as well as at various locations in the Moscow region and near Sochi.
  • Baba Yaga’s clothing was sewn from thin felted wool, silk, and linen.
  • Three sets of leather armor were made for Koshchei (Konstantin Lavronenko). Specifically for three different scenes.
  • A hut on chicken legs, a boyar’s chambers, a swamp, a three-story dungeon, and a magical well were built in the pavilion in Moscow.
  • Barbarian's crown was woven from lace, and then metal was applied using galvanization – first copper, then silver.
