What's left behind the scenes

  • The scandalous themes of the film and its criticism of the Roman Catholic Church led to limited distribution in Europe. Anchor Bay acquired the rights to the film only in 2000 and released it on DVD in the United States.
  • Lucio Fulci (1927-1996) repeatedly called this film his favorite work.
  • Director and screenwriter Lucio Fulci was arrested on charges of violating rules regarding the filming of minors for a scene in which a naked Barbara Bouchet flirts with a young character played by Marcello Tamburrini. The charges were dropped when he explained that the actors were filmed in close-up separately, and that in the scene where the boy walks with a jug to Patricia, it's adult actor Don Semeraro, a dwarf, who replaced Tamburrini (you can notice if you look closely that the character has a different face).
