What's left behind the scenes

  • Real sharks were used in the filming. The shooting took place near Port Lincoln, a city in the state of South Australia.
  • Filming lasted for 5 weeks.
  • The film is based on real events that happened to Ray Boundy in 1983. The yacht he was traveling on with his friend Dennis Murphy and his girlfriend Linda Ann Horton capsized near Townsville, Australia, and all three found themselves in shark-infested waters. Using surfboards, Boundy, Murphy, and Horton attempted to reach a reef where they hoped to await rescue, but soon realized they were being hunted by a nearly five-meter-long tiger shark. The predator bit off Murphy's leg, after which he steered his surfboard away from the others to lure the shark after him. He succeeded, but at the cost of his own life. After that, the shark returned and dragged the girl underwater. Then it was Boundy's turn, but he was lucky. Rescuers pulled him out of the water at the last possible moment.
