What's left behind the scenes
- Filming took place in Alabama from February to April 2019.
- Robert Pattinson and Sebastian Stan wore costumes on set that added volume to their bodies.
- To prepare for his role, Robert Pattinson watched videos of performances by televangelists and pop stars from the period depicted in the film.
- Actor Harry Melling filmed with real spiders on his head. He said he wasn't bothered by spiders, but snakes were another story.
- Robert Pattinson did not work with a dialect coach, and developed the drawn-out Southern accent on his own.
- The plot is based on the 2011 novel of the same name by David Ray Pollock, whose voice provides the voice-over narration in the film. Pollock read the text for the first time as voice-over; he had never narrated even his own books before.
- Explanation of the title: all the characters believed they were conversing with God, but it turned out to be the devil.
