What's left behind the scenes

  • The original title of the animated film, “How are you?”, was borrowed from a 1937 novel by Genzaburo Yoshino.
  • The original title, “How Are You?”, was borrowed from Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 novel, but the film is not based on it.
  • Hayao Miyazaki began working on the project in 2016, before receiving official approval from the studio.
  • In December 2019, after three and a half years of work on the film, it was announced that it was 15% complete. Producer Toshio Suzuki said that Miyazaki usually created 7 to 10 minutes of animation per month, so they decided together to average 5 minutes of material per month. However, Miyazaki ended up working at a rate of about one minute of material per month.
  • According to cinematographer Atsushi Okui, he suggested making the animation colors darker during the digital processing of the drawings to convey the darker aspects of the story.
  • The original title, "How Do You Live?", is taken from a 1937 novel by Genzaburo Yoshino, but the anime is not based on it.
