What's left behind the scenes

  • When the film premiered in West Germany in February 1976, the chief prosecutor ordered it confiscated in order to subsequently ban it. The Stuttgart Regional Court classified the film as pornographic and glorifying violence. However, just a few days later, the film was allowed to be shown throughout West Germany.
  • The props for the coprophagy scenes were made of chocolate and orange marmalade.
  • Salò is the name of a town on Lake Garda, and is where the film takes place.
  • The Criterion Collection DVD release of the film, which quickly became a rarity, sells on the black market for $600 and up.
  • Shortly after filming was completed, director Pier Paolo Pasolini was found brutally murdered.
