What's left behind the scenes
- David Bowie (1947-2016) wears the same wigs in the film that Andy Warhol (1928-1987) used to wear.
- The estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) did not grant permission to use the originals of his works, so copies drawn by director Julian Schnabel were used in the film.
- Benicio Del Toro was so eager to star in this film that he agreed to work without a fee.
- Chris Rock was offered the lead role in the film. The actor declined the offer because he had no idea who Jean-Michel Basquiat was.
- Towards the end of the film, Gary Oldman's character shows the protagonist, played by Jeffrey Wright, a painting and says he painted it in memory of a deceased friend.
