What's left behind the scenes
- Viggo Mortensen dedicated the film to his brothers Charles and Walter.
- Both of Viggo Mortensen's parents suffered from dementia.
- The film had a very limited budget. Viggo Mortensen (who was the director, screenwriter, composer, and performer of one of the roles) not only worked on the film without a fee but also used his own finances.
- Viggo Mortensen cast his own son, Henry Mortensen, in a small role. To better match the image of a 1977 police officer, he even got a haircut and grew a goatee.
- Viggo Mortensen filmed the scenes with the dead duck and snake based on memories from his own childhood.
- Lance Henriksen did not know that one of his co-stars would be David Cronenberg. He realized this only some time later, when he watched a conversation between Cronenberg and Mortensen on YouTube.
- The horse trainer working with the horse was not sure he could convince the horse to lick Lance Henriksen's face. Viggo Mortensen convinced him that it was possible. The horse licked him on the face on command during the filming of Peter Jackson’s adventure film “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” (2002).
- According to Viggo Mortensen, during the filming of the scene with David Cronenberg in the doctor's office, Cronenberg constantly moved his gloved hand towards the lens. Mortensen asked if Cronenberg understood that this made his hand look unnaturally large, to which Cronenberg – the famous horror film director – replied that, of course, he did.
- According to the conditions set for him, Viggo Mortensen was forced to take on many roles of Canadians or Europeans. He himself, as well as his son Henry Mortensen, used Danish citizenship when concluding contracts.
