What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming took place in St. Petersburg (in the palaces of the Grand Dukes, in the Mikhailovsky Castle, and also on the frozen rivers and canals of the city) and the Leningrad Region (in Kronstadt, Gatchina, Vsevolozhsk) from late January to May 2019. Landmarks of St. Petersburg and its surroundings featured in the film include the Peter and Paul Fortress, Vitebsky Railway Station, the Museum of Applied Arts, the Grand Gatchina Palace, and many others. Interior scenes were filmed in the famous palaces of the Northern Capital – the Yusupov Palace, the Marble Palace, the Sheremetev Palace (Fontanny Dom), and also in the palace of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich (House of Scientists).
  • Producer Pyotr Anurov was inspired by Mary Mapes Dodge's 1865 novel, "Silver Skates".
  • A large portion of the film's events unfold on the ice, but the filming crew only managed to shoot some of the scenes on the natural ice of the Neva, Fontanka, Moika, and Kryukov Canal: the winter was warm, with temperatures fluctuating around 0°C. Therefore, the natural ice of St. Petersburg's rivers and canals was reinforced before filming: a flooring was created, a colored substrate was laid (to make the ice look more spectacular and cleaner in the frame), and another 10 cm of ice was poured on top. In total, about 10,000 square meters of ice were reinforced in this way.
  • To film the large-scale ice scenes that could not be done on natural ice, a section of the Moika River and Zimnyaya Kanaletka, 130 m long, was recreated in a pavilion complex in Vsevolozhsk covering 40,000 square meters. Special powerful refrigeration units provided the artificial ice.
