What's left behind the scenes
- As part of the advertising campaign dedicated to the film's release, in June 2006, a replica of the ship 'The Flying Dutchman', used during filming, was towed to the studio-owned private island 'Castaway Cay'. Every visitor to the island has the opportunity to see this grand structure.
- Bill Nighy played Davy Jones wearing a special costume designed for use with 'motion capture' technology. After filming, Davy Jones' appearance was almost entirely computer-generated.
- During its opening weekend, the film set a new North American box office record – its first weekend gross was $135.6 million. Previously, 'Spider-Man' (114.8 million dollars) had held the record for the past four years.
- The first Walt Disney Studios film to feature the updated company logo.
- The only full-scale ship used in the filming of the sequels is 'The Black Pearl'. All other ships, with the exception of 'The Interceptor' from the first film, were represented by sets placed on floating barges.
- The game played by Will Turner and Davy Jones is called "Liar's Dice." This variation of dice game is close to card poker, with elements of bluffing.
- The music playing during the fight in the Tortuga tavern is "Fisher's Hornpipe."
- The man-mollusk speaks Cantonese after losing his head.
- Whenever the word “Tortuga” appears on the ship, it is written in the same font as the “Disney” company logo.
- During filming, the entire film crew was evacuated to Los Angeles due to Hurricane Wilma.
- Bill Nighy wasn't the only actor considered for the role of Davy Jones; Jim Broadbent, Ian Glen, and Richard E. Grant also auditioned.
- The film was the first to use the 'iMocap' system, which employs computer vision techniques to track actors' movements on set. This system was used to create Davy Jones and the crew of his ship.
- Keith Richards, guitarist for The Rolling Stones, was originally slated to play Jack Sparrow's father in a cameo role, but had to decline due to the band's busy touring schedule. However, Keith appeared in subsequent installments of the franchise.
- The idea to shackle Jack to the ship came from Keira Knightley.
- Director Gore Verbinski didn't tell the actors what would happen with the bone cage, as he wanted to achieve a natural reaction from them when it swayed from side to side.
- When the sailors fight over Elizabeth's dress, one of them mentions the ghost of a woman who killed herself shortly before her wedding. This plot echoes the storyline of the Disney attraction "The Haunted Mansion."
- Captain Barbossa's appearance at the end of the film was a pleasant surprise not only for the audience but also for the actors. Before filming the final scene, Gore Verbinski announced that Anamaria (Zoe Saldana) would descend the stairs, so the actors' surprise is genuine.
- In the scene where the captain of the ship Elizabeth sneaks onto complains about taxes and fees imposed by the East India Company, a document listing port tariffs appears. The list includes four items with tariffs in percentages – 7%, 10%, 8%, and 6%, and below the line, the total amount is 32%, although 7+10+8+6=31.
- Keira Knightley had to get a boyish haircut while preparing for her role in 'Domino'. Due to this circumstance, Keira had to resort to hair extensions during the filming of 'Dead Man's Chest'.
