What's left behind the scenes

  • In one scene, Karen tries to drive off a lion with a whip. Meryl Streep was assured that the lion would be tied by its hind legs and there was nothing to fear. However, at the crucial moment, the animal turned out to be untethered, and the camera managed to capture Meryl Streep’s genuine fear when she realized the predator had approached too quickly.
  • Although the film was shot in Africa, lions had to be brought from Californian zoos to the continent. Local laws prohibited filming with genuine African lions.
  • Authentic furniture belonging to Karen Blixen was used during filming.
  • The television version of the film had a runtime of 160 minutes.
