What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, director and screenwriter Kevin Smith announced the cancellation of 'Clerks 3,' after a falling out with his actor friend Jeff Anderson, who played Randall Graves in the comedies 'Clerks' (1994) and 'Clerks 2' (2006). Anderson read the script but decided not to appear in the third film. Smith closed the project and instead filmed the adventure comedy 'Jay and Silent Bob Reboot' (2019). Two weeks before the premiere of that film, Smith revealed that he had spent an entire day with Anderson and Jason Mewes, signing merchandise for the 'Clerks' franchise. This gave Smith, Anderson, and Mewes a chance to reconcile, and Smith was so inspired by what happened that he threw away the old script and began working on a new one with fresh ideas that Anderson liked.
  • The film used the same small convenience store that was filmed in the first 'Clerks' in 1994 in New Jersey, and it was now run by the original owner's son. The first film could only be shot at night (hence the closed blinds), but this time the store was closed to customers for two weeks to allow for daytime filming. The store featured in 'Jay and Silent Bob Reboot' (2019) was merely a set built in New Orleans.
  • The plot idea about Randall recovering from a heart attack and deciding to change his life reflects an incident in the life of director and screenwriter Kevin Smith himself, who almost died from a heart attack some time ago and decided to become vegetarian afterwards.
