What's left behind the scenes
- Juan Antonio Bayona's directorial debut.
- The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it concluded with a 10-minute standing ovation.
- When the writer tells the blind orphan that she has beautiful eyes, she replies that she chose them herself. While she could still see, her parents offered to let her choose her glass eyes.
- Guillermo del Toro played the doctor who treats Laura. His name is not credited in the film.
- The orphanage was filmed in the Spanish town of Llanes. Many of director Juan Antonio Bayona's ideas were impossible to realize on location, so some parts of the building had to be recreated on set. Over 80% of the film was shot in the studio.
- Director Juan Antonio Bayona often hid, in order to jump out from cover at the most unexpected moment and scare the actors.
- When Laura ran to the cave along the ocean, hoping to find Simon, she fell into the water and injured her right leg. However, in the next scene in the hospital, Laura's left leg is bandaged.
