What's left behind the scenes

  • Iron Man was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby in 1963 in the comic Tales of Suspense, #39.
  • Gemma Arterton, Diane Kruger, and Isla Fisher were considered for the role that ultimately went to Jessica Chastain. However, due to a scheduling conflict, Chastain later had to drop out of the film. She was replaced by Rebecca Hall.
  • Jude Law was considered for the role of Aldrich Killian.
  • Disney acquired distribution rights from Paramount for $115 million. The film 'The Avengers' (2012) was also included in this deal. However, as with 'The Avengers', one of the conditions of the deal was that Disney would only be mentioned in the end credits as Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures distributor.
  • Initially, Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures planned to film this movie in Michigan due to tax incentives. After North Carolina guaranteed a $20 million tax break, the producers decided to film there instead of Michigan.
  • This is the first film in the series not directed by Jon Favreau, who also declined to work on 'Magic Kingdom' and 'Jersey Boys'. He admitted that he enjoyed playing Hogan in the third 'Iron Man' even more without directing the film. As he put it, he was like a 'proud grandfather who can play with the child, but doesn't have to change diapers'.
  • One scene was filmed inside the Epic Games company building. This video game developer is known for its Gears of War franchise.
  • In the comics, the pseudonym Iron Patriot belonged to Spider-Man's adversary, the Green Goblin. In this film, it's a new set of Iron Man armor with Captain America's color scheme. Producer Kevin Feige said: “The Avengers saved everyone, not the government, which feels it needs its own hero. This gave us more room to work on the War Machine character, to show how he is torn between loyalty to his friend and his official duties.”
  • Work on the film was halted on August 15, 2012, when Robert Downey Jr. injured his ankle while performing a stunt.
  • Shane Black described the film as a “Tom Clancy thriller” with a focus on real villains, not “two guys in iron suits fighting each other.”
  • Kevin Feige described the film as: “The film is entirely focused on Tony Stark. He’s been stripped of everything, and he has to use his intellect to get out of this situation. He can’t call Thor, Captain America, or Nick Fury.” Robert Downey Jr. described his character as being affected by the world after the events of The Avengers (2012).
  • Andy Lau was offered the role of the Radioactive Man, but he declined due to the birth of his first child. Chen Daoming and Wu Xiubowere were then considered for the role, but it ultimately went to Xueqi Wang.
  • Robert Downey Jr. previously starred in Shane Black's "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (2005) and spoke positively about Black taking over from Jon Favreau, stating that "bringing Black on board as writer and director was the only possible option that Favreau, Marvel Studios and I could sign on for."
  • This is the first time Samuel L. Jackson does not appear in an Iron Man film as Nick Fury.
  • The film is partially based on Warren Ellis's "Extremis" and Joe Quesada's "Sentient Armor" comic book series, as well as on the original story of Iron Man's adversary, the Mandarin.
  • Unlike the first two films in the series, Industrial Light and Magic did not work on the visual effects for this one. Instead, this was handled by Digital Domain and Weta Digital.
  • According to Kevin Feige, the character of the Mandarin was created after the image of Colonel Kurtz from the film "Apocalypse Now" (1979). "He represents a breed of terrorists who worked for intelligence agencies and went mad, becoming obsessed with military tactics."
  • A.I.M. ("Advanced Idea Mechanics") is a scientific organization led by Aldrich Killian. In the comics, it was a simpler organization of evil scientist-terrorists.
  • Filming began on May 25, 2012, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Soundstage filming took place at Sony Screen Gems Studios. Other filming locations included Raleigh, North Carolina, and Miami, Florida.
  • Props artist Russell Bobbitt, who had previously worked on earlier installments of the Iron Man franchise, rejoined the project. His favorite prop was the Mandarin's ten rings. He communicated extensively with jewelers, and as a result, they were able to develop ten unique rings with different stones, custom-designed. The entire process of creating the jewelry took several months.
  • Pop art artist Bask from Florida was hired specifically to create paintings for the Mandarin's office and bedroom. The paintings were intended to reflect the essence of the villain. Although Bask works in the pop art genre, his work for the film was inspired by comics, graffiti, and punk rock aesthetics.
  • The destruction of Stark's mansion was filmed in a water tank at EUE/Screen Gems Studios.
  • The set for the famous Stark mansion was rebuilt in 16 weeks in Wilmington, North Carolina. The entire structure was built on a gimbal platform, allowing the building to be tilted at a 45-degree angle, which expanded the possibilities for filming the scene of the attack on the house.
  • The film features a scene where 13 people fall from a plane, and Iron Man attempts to save them all, despite the suit only being able to hold four. With the participation of a professional Red Bull skydiving team, meticulously planned and timed jumps were carried out over 10 days, with a total of 630 skydivers taking part in the filming of the scene.
  • In the original script, Happy Hogan was supposed to die.
  • At the end of the film, the main villain melts Stark's robot suit in half with a hand strike. According to estimates, the temperature of that hand must have repeatedly exceeded the temperature of the sun's core, that is, 15,000,000 degrees Celsius. Such heat would have killed all living things within a radius of tens of kilometers.
  • At the very end of the film, when Stark blows up all his suits, no fragments fly off from them (that is, the suits simply evaporate).
  • In the Mandarin's shelter, after interrogation by Colonel James Rhodes, Tony and James step aside to discuss how to reach the port. During the interrogation, Tony Stark had a wound under his left eye. And during the conversation with the colonel, it turned out to be under his right eye.
  • The Vice President's phone changes during a conversation with Tony Stark when the shot changes – initially, the Vice President's phone has a camera with a flashlight in the middle of the body, in the next shot the phone has a camera without a flashlight on the left side of the body.
  • This is the first film in the series not directed by Jon Favreau, who also declined to work on "Magic Kingdom" and "Jersey Boys." He admitted that he derived even more pleasure from playing Hogan in the third "Iron Man" installment without directing the film. As he put it, he was like a "proud grandfather who can play with a child, but doesn't have to change diapers."
