What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the play 'God of Carnage,' which was released in 2006 and written by French actress, playwright, and screenwriter Yasmina Reza. It premiered in December 2006 in Zurich, Switzerland. The French premiere took place in January 2008 in Paris, and the British premiere in March 2008 in London.
  • The American premiere of the play on Broadway took place on March 22, 2009, with previews beginning on February 28, 2009. The original cast included Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini, and Marcia Gay Harden. The final performance was on June 6, 2010. A total of 452 regular performances and 28 previews were held on Broadway.
  • Although the play and film are set in Brooklyn, New York, filming took place entirely in Paris. This was due to director Roman Polanski's ongoing legal issues with the American justice system, which have lasted for over thirty years.
  • The role of Michael was initially offered to Matt Dillon.
  • Immediately before filming began, director Roman Polanski scheduled two weeks of intensive rehearsals for the quartet of actors. Each was to memorize all of their lines from beginning to end, similar to how it is usually done in theater. During this process, the director also made a number of small changes to the adapted English text of the play.
  • Director Roman Polanski appears in a cameo role as a neighbor who opens his front door to see what is happening in the hallway.
