What's left behind the scenes

  • The first sequel to "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" made without the support of Platinum Dunes.
  • In 2009, Platinum Dunes announced their decision to discontinue the franchise after the release of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning". The rights to "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" were then acquired by Lionsgate.
  • Marilyn Burns, who played Sally Hardesty in the original film, here plays a character named Verna. This film and 'The Reckoning' (2012) marked her first film appearance in the last 28 years (not counting her cameo role in 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4: The Next Generation,' 1994).
  • Initially, the idea of a new trilogy was proposed. The second film would have been a prequel to the first. The first film would have been entirely about the hospital, the second would have described the preceding events, and the third would have completed the storyline. However, fearing that this was too ambitious and risky a project, the producers preferred to follow the original story.
  • The scenes in the burning Sawyer house at the beginning of the film were shot in Shreveport in 104-degree heat.
  • Gunnar Hansen played Leatherface in 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre' (1974).
  • John Dugan, who played Grandpa in 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre' (1974), reprised his role in this film.
  • Bill Moseley played Robert Sawyer in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" (1986). In this film, he played Drayton Sawyer, the cook from the first two films.
  • This film featured four actors from previous installments of the franchise, the highest number previously being three (in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4: The Next Generation", 1994).
  • The character of Sheriff Hooper, played by Tom Berry, is named after Tobe Hooper, who was the writer and director of the first two films.
  • This film did not have any advance screenings for film critics.
  • In the original script, Leatherface's name was Jebediah Sawyer. However, it was later changed to Jedediah Sawyer. In the 2003 remake, Jedediah is the name of a child in the Hewitt family.
  • In this film, as in the original, the first victim was beaten to death while wandering alone through the house.
  • This film features three different actors playing the role of Leatherface. Gunnar Hansen portrays him in archival footage, Sam McCurdy plays him in his youth, and Dan Yeager performs the main role in the film.
  • The film's advertising used the slogans “Buzz. Kill.” and “Evil Wears Many Faces” on the posters.
  • The film is set in 2012. The beginning of the film shows Heather Miller as a child in 1974. Therefore, in 2012, she should be at least 38 years old, however, her character appears much younger. Actress Alexandra Daddario was 26 years old at the time of filming.
  • The events when the house burned down and the entire family was killed occurred on August 19th. However, later in the film, when Heather reads a newspaper, the article about it is on the front page, and the publication itself is dated August 19th. But the events described in the article occurred after she left.
  • It is raining heavily when Darryl is picked up. However, subsequent shots from inside the car show that there is no rain outside.
  • When Heather examines a box of evidence at the police station, she finds a copy of a city newspaper. When she flips it over to read the headline, the newspaper only displays the date, August 19th, but no year.
  • When one of the film's characters uses the FaceTime app to show the others what he sees in the Sawyer house, his iPhone focuses (this is noticeable by the blue square in the center of the screen), but this doesn't happen during the video call. This indication suggests that he simply had camera mode enabled.
  • At the beginning of the film, Gunnar Hansen, who played Leatherface in Tobe Hooper's original horror film "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" (1974) that launched the franchise, is briefly shown in the role of Boss Sawyer. This marked Hansen's first appearance in a film from the franchise since Hooper's cult classic. According to the actor, he had been offered roles in subsequent films in the franchise before, but was not satisfied with the fee.
