What's left behind the scenes
- A free adaptation of the life story of radio host Adrian Cronauer (1938-2018).
- The original screenplay was written by Cronauer himself in 1979, but it was rewritten several times afterward. Initially, Cronauer envisioned it as a television series or part of the “Movie-of-the-Week” anthology, but then the script fell into the hands of Robin Williams (1951-2014), who realized it was perfect for him, after which Cronauer’s script was completely rewritten to fit Williams.
- In the radio shows hosted by his character, Robin Williams constantly improvised.
- Williams’ portrayal of Adrian Cronauer showed him in a somewhat different light than how things actually were. According to his biography, Cronauer himself claimed that the film was approximately 45% accurate. According to Cronauer, the film depicts him as an activist in the anti-war movement, while in reality he always protested solely against stupidity. Cronauer later became a lawyer and passed away in 2018. He was an active member of the US Republican Party and Deputy Director of the Bush-Cheney reelection campaign in 2004. Moreover, according to Cronauer himself, had he done even half of what Williams depicted, he would have been brought to trial and imprisoned.
