What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, the film was conceived as a story about a hitman in Bangkok. Takuya Kimura was supposed to play the killer, and the plot twists would culminate in hotel room 2046.
  • Production of the film was suspended due to the outbreak of atypical pneumonia in March 2003.
  • A copy of the film for the Cannes Film Festival was delivered at the very last moment. It is the first film in the festival's history that required a change in the screening schedule.
  • The film's title alludes to an event from the previous year, namely the 50th anniversary of the promise made by the Chinese government to grant Hong Kong independence. In 1997, it returned to Chinese sovereignty.
  • In one version of the script, Tony Leung was supposed to play a postman from the future.
  • The director declined an offer to showcase the film at the New York Film Festival. At the same time, "2046" was intended to be the closing film of the Edinburgh Film Festival.
  • In the scene where Faye Wong's character is crying, only the left side of the actress's face is shown, as her right eye does not produce tears.
  • During filming, a photographer from the Hong Kong tabloid Sudden Weekly paid a bribe to have his photographs included among the decorations of the hotel where the film is set. When Wong Kar-wai noticed this, he ordered a redesign of the rooms. The photographer served three months in prison for bribery.
  • Each character speaks their own language. Mr. Chow speaks Cantonese, Bai Ling speaks Mandarin, and Tak speaks Japanese. However, they understand each other perfectly.
  • In one version of the script, Tony Leung Chiu-wai was supposed to play a future postman.
