What's left behind the scenes

  • The runtime of the full version of the film is 131 minutes.
  • The film depicts the Battle of Abu Klea, which took place from January 16-18, 1885, in Sudan between a British expeditionary force, the 'Desert Column,' and Mahdist forces exceeding 12,000 men. The screen presents a fictionalized version of the actual battle.
  • Kate Hudson turned down the role of Mary Jane in Sam Raimi's 2002 superhero film 'Spider-Man' in order to film this movie.
  • The film mentions General Hicks. William Hicks (1830-1883), known as Hicks Pasha, was a British officer who served in the Egyptian army. In 1883, Hicks, at the head of approximately 10,000 soldiers, was sent to confront the Mahdist rebels of Muhammad Ahmad, where they were ambushed and almost completely annihilated. Hicks himself was killed in the Battle of El Obeid.
