What's left behind the scenes

  • There is an edited television version of the film in which some scenes have been omitted or remounted to lower the age rating.
  • In the scene where Chrissy hits Robert in the face for pretending to drown, Christina Ricci forgot to turn away and received a full-force blow directly to the face. Due to the resulting bruise, filming had to be suspended for several days.
  • According to actress Rosie O’Donnell, her character Roberta was supposed to be a lesbian, but the film was subsequently re-edited, removing the lesbian theme and inserting a line about “Roberta living in sin with her boyfriend.” Seven years after the film’s release, Rosie O’Donnell came out and publicly announced that she was a lesbian.
  • Kirsten Dunst was offered the role of Chrissy, but the role required her to gain weight, and she declined.
