This is the only film about Asterix with a screenplay written by the creators of the character, René Goscinny (1926-1977) and Albert Uderzo.
The Roman Empire (especially Byzantium) was known for its cumbersome bureaucratic apparatus, which – to a certain extent – led to its decline.
Unlike the comics, the Romans know nothing of the Gauls' magic potion, and therefore believe that the Gauls’ superhuman strength must be due to the gods. It creates the impression that the events of this film take place in a different universe than the original comics, because it contains magical characters that were not in the comics (in particular, ghosts and gods), the humor is more absurd, and the plot does not follow historical events.
A new character, a German named Cylindric, has been introduced to the plot – a very polite and sympathetic hero. One of the scriptwriters and directors, Albert Uderzo, introduced him because previous films in the franchise depicted Germans as aggressive and far from friendly.
Asterix says "Hello" in different languages (English, Japanese, German, etc.), and at the same time, the viewer sees the flag of the corresponding country. When the French flag appears on the screen, Asterix crows, because the rooster is the national symbol of France.
Obelix's food is prepared by a Belgian chef with a Brussels accent named Mannekenpiks. His name is a reference to the sculpture "Manneken Pis", or the Peeing Boy (a symbol and one of the main attractions of Brussels).
