The film is based on Cornelia Funke's novel «The Thief Lord» (Herr der Diebe, 2000).
In the scene in St. Mark's Basilica, Hornet carries a hardcover book. This is one of the editions of the novel «Inkheart», also written by Cornelia Funke.
Throughout the film, sound effects previously used in the popular computer game “Starcraft” appear repeatedly.
Some scenes set on the streets of Venice were actually filmed on a large set built in Luxembourg.
