What's left behind the scenes
- The National Security Agency, or NSA, refused to assist the filmmakers. Aerial shots of the NSA headquarters at Fort Meade in Maryland had to be taken from a considerable distance in open airspace.
- Gene Hackman refused the role in this film six times, but finally agreed after a phone call with director Tony Scott (1944-2012). After working with Roland Emmerich on "Independence Day" (1996), he agreed to work with Scott, and Will Smith, who wanted to work with Hackman.
- The film's technical advisor, Larry Cox, once worked at the NSA.
- The car chase through the storm drain was filmed in a large ventilation tunnel in Baltimore, Maryland. Access was only possible through an administrative building via stairs and a descending elevator, so the cars used in the scene were initially disassembled into several parts, lowered three floors, and then reassembled and repainted. Once filming was complete, the cars were disassembled again and lifted back up.
- Initially, Tom Cruise was considered for a role in the film, but he had to decline as he was still working with Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) on the thriller 'Eyes Wide Shut' (1999).
- When Gene Hackman's character leads Will Smith's character to the 'office' located in a warehouse, you can notice that it is a homemade Faraday cage, i.e., an enclosure used to block electromagnetic fields.
- Filming took place from November 5, 1997, to April 6, 1998.
