• Mandy Moore was originally cast in the role of Jenny and even managed to film all of her scenes, but when the filming was decided to be restarted, she was replaced by the singer Mia.
• In the original script, Christina Ricci and Jesse Eisenberg were not brother and sister.
• The film took two years to make and cost the studio $70 million, but the final result completely dissatisfied Wes Craven. He complained that the film's producers, the Weinstein brothers, had so drastically cut the film, removing all the bloody episodes to obtain a wider release rating, that the film had become like a television production.
