What's left behind the scenes

  • The situation with using a credit card to make an international phone call and call for help is based on a real case.
  • Initially, the US Department of Defense provided comprehensive support to the film crew, but this ended after a preview of the film in November 1986. Nevertheless, members of the US Marine Corps vouched for the accuracy of the events depicted in the film.
  • The film’s title refers to the Battle of Broken Heart Ridge, which took place during the Korean War between September 13 and October 15, 1951.
  • Before working on this film, Mario Van Peebles could not play the guitar, but he took several lessons to convince Clint Eastwood that he was suitable for the role of Corporal Jones.
  • In the original script, Sergeant Highway was an officer in the US Army. The script was reviewed and categorically rejected by the Army. The character was changed to a member of the Marine Corps. The Corps initially gave its approval, but then changed its mind – due to the abundance of profanity in the film.
  • The film is a fictionalized depiction of the actual US invasion of Grenada in 1983. Only some elements of the plot are based on real events.
  • All members of the military orchestra were actually musicians from the U.S. Marine Corps 1st Division Band. Their names are not mentioned in the credits.
