- The role of Bart was specifically written for Albert Finney, but he turned it down to star in "Big Fish" (2003). The role was also offered to Anthony Hopkins, Michael Caine, and Brian Cox. Ultimately, Bart was played by Bob Hoskins.
- In the first version of the script, Sam (Morgan Freeman) was not blind. But after Morgan Freeman visited a school for the blind to learn piano, he suggested making his character blind, as he believed it would be easier for Sam to 'see' a child in Danny, rather than a hardened killer.
