Gilles de Rais (played by Cassel) was a real person who, after the war and Joan of Arc's death, returned to his lands. Years later, he was arrested on charges of murdering more than a hundred young boys and was executed. Some historians believe that his crimes formed the basis for the French fairy tale 'Bluebeard' about a man who killed his wives and hid their bodies in his large house.
