What's left behind the scenes
- MGM shut down the project because they refused to pay Kevin Costner a $15 million fee, considering the commercial failures of his films. The project was then bought out by Universal Studios.
- Allison Lohman played a small role as a patient with cancer, but the character was ultimately cut from the plot entirely. Because she had shaved her head for the role, she had to wear a wig for the filming of the drama 'White Oleander' (Peter Kosminsky, 2002).
- The character of Joe was written for Harrison Ford, but he turned down the role to take a year-long break from filming.
