What's left behind the scenes

  • The making of the film involved 29 dogs and 10 trainers. The trainers prepared the dogs for filming over eight weeks. Before filming, the actors spent 3-4 days in close contact with the dogs so the animals could get used to them.
  • Michelle Rodriguez (playing Nikki) performed many of the stunts herself.
  • To make the dogs look dirty and unkempt, they were smeared with a mixture of mud, hairspray, and glycerin.
  • Ian Somerhalder was initially cast for one of the roles, but he left the project even before filming began.
  • The phrase “Hello Cujo” is a reference to Stephen King’s novel *Cujo* (1981), in which a Saint Bernard contracts rabies and begins to terrorize a woman and child forced to seek refuge in a broken-down car.
