- The film is based on the story of Christy Brown (1932-1981), an Irish writer and artist born with cerebral palsy who was only able to write and paint with the toes of his left foot.
- According to a segment from the film on the special edition DVD, Daniel Day-Lewis broke two ribs while filming, assuming an awkward position in his wheelchair. Moreover, the actor stubbornly refused to break character, even visiting the canteen on set during his lunch break. Day-Lewis subsequently fully embodied his character Christy Brown before the arrival of his agent, who ended up leaving empty-handed.
- Many scenes in the film were shot using a mirror image, as the lead actor, Daniel Day-Lewis, could only act with a reasonable degree of confidence using his right leg.
