Short description
Barley Scott Blair, a Lisbon-based editor of Russian literature who unexpectedly begins working for British intelligence, is commissioned to investigate the purposes of Dante, a dissident scientist trapped in the decaying Soviet Union that is crumbling under the new open-minded policies.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming took place in Vancouver, Moscow, Zagorsk, Peredelkino, Leningrad, Lisbon, and London.
  • The film was the first major Western film project to shoot many scenes in the USSR with the permission of the Soviet government.
  • Due to food shortages in the USSR, local residents constantly gathered around the film set, but not to see their idols – the movie stars, but to watch the film crew, consisting of residents of Western countries and Soviet citizens, eat products imported from the UK. When Michelle Pfeiffer learned that Western filmmakers were forbidden from feeding the extras recruited from Soviet citizens, she left the set in anger and refused to return until they were fed. High-ranking officials of Soviet cinema even had to be called to the set to appease Pfeiffer.
  • Before filming began, the script was submitted for approval to the state film studio "Mosfilm". According to producer Paul Maslansky, no attempts were made to change the script; it was simply checked for the absence of anti-Soviet sentiments and pornography.
  • Filming took place from October 2nd to December 20th, 1989.
