What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on the first books from Cressida Cowell’s "How to Train Your Dragon" series (2003-2012).
- There was no warrior girl Astrid in Cressida Cowell's book, but the directors and screenwriters decided that a bright female character was essential. Also, one of the twins, Ruffnut and Tuffnut, was made female in the cartoon.
- In the cartoon, Stoick says "those blasted creatures won't give up!", "lead us home, devil!", "the abysses of hell will open up!". These concepts did not exist among pagan Vikings; they only appeared with the advent of Christianity.
