• The idea for this film came to screenwriter Brian Koppelman while visiting one of New York City's underground gambling dens. After losing $750, he conceived the idea for the future screenplay.
• The script called for Edward Norton's character to smoke. However, the non-smoking actor refused to even touch a cigarette.
• In one episode, Mike (Matt Damon) takes money from a book on poker, "Super/System," written by the legendary poker player Doyle Brunson. Mike quotes several passages from this book. Notably, Damon played poker with Brunson at the 1998 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas and lost to him.
• Johnny Chan agreed to play himself in the film only out of love for his daughter, who desperately wanted to meet Matt Damon.
