Short description
Captivated by the lure of sudden wealth, the quiet rural lives of two brothers erupt into conflicts of greed, paranoia and distrust when over $4 million in cash is discovered at the remote site of a downed small airplane. Their simple plan to retain the money while avoiding detection opens a Pandora's box when the fear of getting caught triggers panicked behavior and leads to virulent consequences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the novel of the same name by Scott B. Smith.
  • Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis were cast in roles in the film but were forced to decline due to commitments to other projects.
  • A meeting takes place in the store between Bill Paxton’s character and an old man. Paxton’s father played the latter. The actor himself had no idea he would meet his father on set. As it turned out, John Paxton had written director Sam Raimi a letter expressing admiration for his work and asking if there was a small role for him in any film. Raimi called Paxton Sr. for an audition and cast him as Mr. Schmidt.
  • In January 1988, a scene with Billy Bob Thornton and Bill Paxton (1955-2017) was lost during transport of the filmed material by Northwest Airlines from Minnesota to Los Angeles. The lost scene had been filmed specifically in Minnesota. The film was insured, so the scene was simply reshot.
  • The scenes in the bar were filmed in the town of Delano, Minnesota. It was an old establishment converted into private housing, which had to be used for filming because the town's only real bar was unsuitable for shooting for a number of reasons.
