- The film is based on Nicholas Sparks' novel "A Walk to Remember" (1999).
- The novel's events unfold in 1958, but the filmmakers decided to set the story in modern times.
- The film was shot in just 39 days, despite Mandy Moore being available for only 10 hours of filming per day during that time (in 2001, the actress had not yet reached adulthood).
- The photos of Jamie on the fireplace in the Sullivan house are childhood photos of Mandy Moore.
- Shane West liked the car used during filming so much that he decided to spend $5,000 to buy it after production wrapped.
- After the film's release, one of Mandy Moore's fans named a star after her, just as in the movie.
- The town of Beaufort, where the film takes place, actually exists and is located in North Carolina.
- The film's director, Adam Shankman, appears in a cameo. He plays an orderly wheeling a wheelchair in which Mandy Moore's character is sitting.
