What's left behind the scenes

  • Taking off the "Phoenix" from the sandy surface was deemed too dangerous (in reality, it took off from solid ground), so it was decided to enlist the services of the legendary stunt pilot Paul Mantz (1903-1965), who was only supposed to touch the landing gear to the surface and then gain altitude, simulating takeoff. During the filming of the second take, the aircraft touched the surface and, due to a broken strut, nosedived and flipped over. The pilot died instantly. All the necessary footage had already been shot during the first take, so the film crew simply rented a vintage aircraft from a museum for the few close-ups that remained to be filmed.
