Short description
Petra von Kant is a successful fashion designer -- arrogant, caustic, and self-satisfied. She mistreats Marlene (her secretary, maid, and co-designer). Enter Karin, a 23-year-old beauty who wants to be a model. Petra falls in love with Karin and invites her to move in.
What's left behind the scenes
- Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945-1982) wrote the screenplay during a 12-hour flight from Berlin to Los Angeles.
- A wall in the apartment is covered with an enlarged reproduction of the painting “Midas and Bacchus” by the French artist Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665), one of the founders of the classical school.
- Throughout the entire film, only women are shown on screen. There is not a single shot featuring a male character; they are only mentioned – Petra’s husband, Karin’s lover, her husband, and so on.
- Marleen is one of the main characters, but she does not utter a single word on screen.
