The film is based on the biography of a real person – Hunter Patch Adams.
In the film, Hunter "Patch" Adams is depicted as a man who decided to study medicine quite late in life. In reality, Adams received his medical degree at the age of 26.
During filming, Robin Williams (1951-2014) and the other actors involved collaborated closely with the international charity Make-A-Wish Foundation (which helps fulfill the wishes of terminally ill children) and communicated with children undergoing cancer treatment. These children appeared on screen with Williams in a scene in the hospital room.
The character of Karen Fisher is fictional, however her story is partially based on a real person – a male friend of Dr. Adams who died in similar circumstances.
