• The film is based on Roald Dahl's story "Fantastic Mr Fox" (1974).
• Henry Selick was confirmed as the animation director, but soon Selick left the project to work on the adaptation of Neil Gaiman's book “Coraline”.
• Wes Anderson decided to record the actors not in a studio, but at various locations to create a sense of naturalism.
• The original work was written during a difficult time for the author. He lost one of his five children, and another was involved in an accident. This prompted him to write a work in which the father acts as a protector of the family.
• The color palette of the tape is mostly autumnal (all in yellows, oranges, and browns) with practically no green or blue. However, Christopher's blue wardrobe was used deliberately to emphasize that he is a guest.
• During the recording of one of the dialogues, the best take was nearly ruined by the sound of a boat passing nearby. Wes Anderson added an airplane to the film to save the recording.
• Mr. Fox's wardrobe was based on corduroy suits owned by Wes Anderson himself.
• Anderson told the set designers that they should use real trees and sand, but in miniature.
