Noam Murro was initially appointed as the director of the film, but was removed from the project due to creative differences with DreamWorks management.
Richard Kelly also had a chance to direct the film, but was forced to decline. Ultimately, the director of the film was appointed as the creator of the Japanese versions of the horror film – Hideo Nakata.
